The Office of the Women’s Rights Advisor was among the strategic stakeholders during the launch of the “Gender and Education Movement” in a colorful ceremony at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development.

In her remarks at the ceremony coordinated by the National Gender and Equality Commission, Hon. Chiggai Harriette lauded the Movement formed to champion gender equality, especially in regard to girls’ rights and empowerment.

She said the increased awareness and spotlight on barriers to girls’ education is a significant step forward in Kenya’s collective efforts to promote gender equality plus an equitable and inclusive educational landscape for all Kenyans.
“Education is a fundamental human right that unlocks countless opportunities for individuals and societies. However, for too long, women and girls have faced systemic barriers that limit their access to quality education”, the CS said.

She noted that these barriers, rooted in gender stereotypes and discrimination, not only perpetuate gender inequality but also hinder economic development, social progress, and the overall well-being of girls.
The Office of the Women Rights Advisor strongly believes that every child, regardless of their gender, deserves equal opportunities to learn and succeed. And investing in girls’ education is an investment in the future of our country.
The Advisor challenged the Movement to advocate for policies and practices that promote gender equality in education, including gender-responsive curricula, equitable access to resources, and measures to prevent and address gender-based violence.
In the remarks read on her behalf by Director Carol Karimi, Hon. Chiggai also called for investment in training and professional development programmes that equip teachers with the knowledge and skills to create inclusive classrooms and promote gender-sensitive teaching practices.

The Movement was officially launched by Senator Veronica Maina. She was flanked by the National Gender and Equality Commission CEO Dr Purity Ngina and other high-level partners and stakeholders.
